NEW YEAR . NEW PROJECTS.

Happy New Year everyone !  Hope your holidays were grand.

Now ,with all my holiday deadlines over. Time to get back to blogging. I must say I missed this. Don't know what this new year will bring, but I can't wait ! My husband read me my 2013 horoscope and it Say's It will be a glorious year.  1st. order of note for the new year. For those of you following the DESK TO ISLAND project for my son Rock, it is primed but not painted and completed yet. I will be finishing it soon. Promise. My garage ( my main work space) had become over ran with the holidays. This is where the larger projects take place. So, don't think I've forgotten.

New project!

My family has come to know how much I enjoy receiving broken down items. And they do enjoy challenging me as often as they can. On Christmas day, Our son Jess brung me a new challenge. He had found a discarded whiskey/mirror sign. This sign had a rather large cracked corner and chipped edges all the way around. Basically it was a poster behind a mirror and cork on the back. The mirror has some border color and advertising on it also. As soon as I looked at the piece I knew I wanted to keep it as a whole, BUT I wanted to enhance it. I told my husband I wanted to add a frame to camouflage the damage while enhancing the piece in the proses. I didn't want to add more weight,it was heavy enough already. I wanted to make the bottle appear larger and give the whole thing more depth. My husband came up with a great solution. CARDBOARD ! Below are the pic's. We used cardboard for the frame , spray painted it black.      Take a look ! This is the project and the items used to redo it.  A knife, to cut the cardboard, pencil, T-square, ruler, and spray paint ( not shown) and Glue, ( also not shown). In the next pic's You can see the real damage to the piece.
more damage pic's below.
My husband placed the mirror  on the back side of the cardboard and traced the size of it. He then cut into the cardboard,  being careful only to cut into one layer of the cardboard. This was a thick piece of cardboard- 5/8' thick. And this was done from the back. Next, we turned the cardboard over ( front side) and I drew the pattern for the frame. He than cut it out. Then, we cleaned the mirror, painted the frame and glued it in place. The whole piece still hangs from the same hanger that was already on the mirror ( 2 picture hangers and a wire) do to the light weight of the cardboard, we didn't have to change it. I think it looks better than new !   Thanks to my husband. Now Jess might want the sign back . Look at the finished project !
6 pic's below. What do you think ?

 The cardboard worked out great.
and the black color almost made it look as if it light up .
following the shape of the bottle gave more depth to it.
And the frame now looks like wood.  This project can be done in a couple hours, with things laying around in the garage.  Hope I got your creative juices going.
